Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research

Gun violence is plaguing our country and its communities. I’ve picked three 501(c)3s attempting to address this issue. They range from the large D.C.-based Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (EFSGV) to the small and super local Oakland-based Youth Alive! Rounding out the group is the LA-based Women Against Gun Violence. Please join me in supporting this hand-picked group of non-profits dedicated to sensible policy reform and responsible gun ownership.

Running a Half-Marathon for Syrians & Moldovans in Need. On July 31st, me, Natalia (my sister), Sean (Hubby) and Mohamed Nur (my 13 year old nephew; he also goes by Mido) will be running the San Francisco Marathon!!! (not to worry, we're running the half-marathon/5k race respectively). Why are we doing such a crazy thing you ask? Well, with good reason...Donation to our run will support two very important and worthy causes - the Syrian Refugee Relief NGO - Karam Foundation- and Hospice Angelus Moldova. A bit about them... 1. Karam Foundation - We are in the midst of the Europe's biggest refugee movement since WWII. The war has resulted in over 4 million Syrians refugees, half of whom are children. Every 50$ raised here will help one Syrian refugee family from Rehanli, Turkey, for one month, with medical assistance, food parcels and education for their children. http://www.karamfoundation.org/sponsor/ 2. Hospice Angelus Moldova - A crucial organization that provides palliative care for terminally ill adults and children, as well as a great deal of education and advocacy in Moldova. In 2015, they performed 8,500+ home palliative care home visits, cared for 53 children, consulted for 4,200+ people, and distributed 100,000+ stoma therapy bags. http://www.hospice.md/about-us/ I hope you will help us to support these two very worthwhile causes. A sunPower employee has been working with a group of friends on a really interesting project to help a community of 800+ people in rural Colombia with their access to water. They founded an organization called Acceso Solar. Their project will be installing a solar powered water pump for Las Piedras community so they can have cleaner, cheaper, and safer access to water. After 8 months of hard work, they are ready to launch their crowdfunding campaign and it will be amazing if you can support them now to build momentum and make a tangible difference for the community of Las Piedras.

In response to the tragic shooting on Sunday June 12, 2016 in Orlando, FL, Bright Funds has established the Support Victims and LGBTQ Community in Orlando Fund. This fund is comprised of pre-vetted nonprofits working on the ground in Orlando in response to the tragedy. We are continually evaluating the needs on the ground and the nonprofits addressing those needs. This Fund will evolve as new nonprofits are identified that will address the community's shifting needs. Creating the education infrastructure needed to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young girls requires a multi prong approach with efforts lasting years, if not decades. Our first priority will be to support girls in Tanzania by providing them with much needed resources to acquire quality education from primary up to university levels. We shall focus on less-privileged girls, especially those in rural areas as they face the greatest challenge in acquiring any form of education. Nearly half (47%) of primary school aged girls are not attending school. Between 2004 and 2010, pregnancy among Tanzanian girls aged 15 to 19 years fell by about 12%. Still, more than 40% of young women begin having children by age 18, and the country has one of the highest adolescent pregnancy rates in the world. Girls in urban areas of Tanzania were eight times more likely to finish secondary education than girls in rural areas.

India Literacy Project (ILP)

On Saturday April 16th, 2016, Ecuador and Japan were hit with powerful earthquakes and multiple aftershocks. A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck northern Ecuador on Saturday April 16th resulting in at least 272 people killed and 2,527 people injured, according to the government of Ecuador. A magnitude 6.2 quake struck Japan on Thursday April 14th, followed by a magnitude 7.3 quake on Saturday April 16th. More than 40 people have been confirmed dead and 1,100 injured in Japan. Through the Ecuador and Japan Earthquake Relief Fund, we show our solidarity and support for the communities affected in both Japan and Ecuador.

In response to the earthquakes in Ecuador and Japan, our community at Box is able to come together to support Box.org nonprofit partners involved in disaster recovery efforts.

In India, more than 50 percent of women are illiterate. Living in poverty with a limited education greatly hinders these women from finding quality jobs to support their families. They face the dilemma of leaving their children to wander about the village as they work in the field. Their children are vulnerable and often end up with a substandard education. Our Women’s Empowerment project empowers poor women in rural villages with valuable sewing skills and a sewing machine so they can earn a respectable living and help their families. $75 provides training for a woman, $100 provides the sewing machine and $175 will both train and equip her. The women will attend a tailoring school and receive six months of training, where they will develop their sewing skills and learn about basic business practices. Once a woman graduates from the tailoring program, she will receive her own sewing machine. She will be able to start her own tailoring business from home and earn a daily income that can provide food and basic necessities for the whole family. The beauty of a home based business for women is that it not only provides income that can be used for food clothing and education, but since they are home it helps them improve their children’s opportunity for success. The children will be able to attend a better school and their mother will be home to help insure their homework gets done and that they are in school every day. Empowering a woman with training and a sewing machine is a great way to transform a family.
